Whiskey Round: Capitol Offense

Capitol Offense

Good afternoon, folks. It’s Friday, and if you’re like me, you started the week in the hopes of a dry January and, by Wednesday, failed. By our assessment, January 6th marks a new Holiday, where we break our NYE promises to ourselves – call it National Broken New Year’s Resolution Day.

So, let’s ramp up the whiskey-drinking, especially given the state of things in the Capitol early this week. At least, it inspired us to find this pretty art poster on Amazon, which we simply couldn’t pass up.

Heaven Hill is the only local, independent, family-owned, and operated company to reach this historical benchmark.

The milestone wraps up a banner year of Heaven Hill’s continued investment in the future of American Whiskey. Now aging more than 1.8 million barrels across 63 warehouses, Heaven Hill’s Bernheim distillery produces 1,300 barrels per day as the largest single-site Bourbon distillery in American Whiskey.

Recognized by industry professionals and consumers alike, the award season culminated with Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon named as Whisky Advocate’s 2020 Whisky of the Year, the second Whisky of the Year for Heaven Hill Distillery in the past four years.

Here’s this rad Chart from Reddit highlighting every brand under the Heaven Hill umbrella.

Raise your Michter’s glass to Willie Pratt, former master distiller 🥃

Willie Pratt led a life for whiskey: born in 1942, he went from his hometown Hazard to Louisville in search of work at the age of 20.

In 2017 the Whisky Magazine inducted him into the legendary Hall of Fame.

On the backlit shelves behind Batch’s bar top, you can find 130 bourbons, 100 Scotches, and 50 rye whiskey options among other tastes, with selections from as far away as Japan, Ireland, India and Mexico.

Owner Spece points to his Buffalo Trace, Old Fashioned Copper bourbon whiskey, distilled in 1994.

Three of these bottles came to Tucson last year. Two went to a liquor store and the third came here. We charge $250 an ounce. It is one of those things most people have never even seen in person, let alone tasted.

NY’s finest bourbon

This week’s featured review highlights The Widow Jane 10, one of the best whiskeys your money can buy right now. Sourced from barrels in neighboring states, it uses water from the New York area to create some of the most exciting pallets we have tasted when it comes to blended bourbon. Check out what the critics agree on and what they don’t in our Weekly Review Round.

Cocktail

Classic Cocktail: Paul Bar’s Black Manhattan 🍸

This spot in Palm Springs has us debating a road trip. Since stringent stay-at-home orders are in place for LA County, here’s the recipe for us to enjoy at home until it’s safe to do so.

  • 2.5 ounces rye whiskey (Paul Bar uses Old Overholt)
  • 1 ounce Amaro Averna
  • 3 dashes orange bitters

Stir 30 times in a mixing glass with ice, strain into a chilled martini glass, and garnish with an orange peel and a Luxardo maraschino cherry.
